Why adults seek a diagnosis

What brings people to us for an evaluation

Most adults who come in for an ADHD diagnosis have been living with the symptoms for years. Something shifts — a conversation, a realization, a child's diagnosis — and they decide it's time to find out for certain.

You've spent decades wondering why you have to work so much harder than everyone else to get through ordinary tasks.

Your child or someone close to you was diagnosed with ADHD, and you recognized yourself in everything you read about it afterward.

You've been treated for anxiety, stress, or depression for years. It helped some, but something always felt like it was being missed.

You can hyperfocus on things that interest you for hours, but routine tasks — emails, laundry, paperwork — feel genuinely impossible to start.

A life change — new job, new city, becoming a parent — stripped away the routines that were keeping things together, and everything fell apart at once.

You've wondered long enough. You want an actual answer — not another maybe — so you can stop guessing and start doing something about it.

An evaluation takes the guesswork out of it. You leave with a clear answer.

What the process looks like

A closer look at our evaluation process

Our evaluations go well beyond a quick questionnaire. Here's what's actually involved — and why each part matters for getting you accurate, useful answers.

01 — Clinical interview

We start by actually listening

The evaluation begins with a structured clinical interview — a real conversation about what you're experiencing, where it shows up, and how long it's been going on. This isn't a checkbox exercise. Your provider is building a full picture of how attention and focus challenges play out in your day-to-day life across different settings.

02 — Standardized testing

Gold-standard assessment tools

We use validated, widely-recognized rating scales and symptom inventories to measure attention, impulsivity, executive functioning, and more. These tools are designed to detect patterns that casual observation misses, and they give us objective data to back up the clinical picture — which matters when you need documentation for work, school, or accommodations.

03 — History review

Context makes all the difference

ADHD doesn't start in adulthood — it just gets noticed later. We look at your developmental history, school records if available, and patterns going back to childhood. We also screen for conditions that commonly overlap with ADHD, like anxiety and depression, so nothing gets missed or misattributed.

04 — Results & next steps

Clear answers before you leave

At the end of your evaluation, your provider walks you through what they found in plain language — no jargon, no waiting weeks to find out. You'll receive a written report you can use with your employer, school, or treatment team, along with a clear plan for what comes next, whether that's treatment with us or a referral elsewhere.

    Get a clear answer

We go through what we found together, in plain English. You leave knowing exactly what the evaluation showed and what it means for you.

  4. 04

    Start your plan

We build a treatment plan around your goals and walk through every option, medication included, so you understand the trade-offs before committing to anything.

  5. 05

    Check in and adjust

We keep tabs on how it's going and adjust as your symptoms and your life change over time.

What a diagnosis changes

The part where things start to make sense.

A diagnosis doesn't change who you are. It changes how you understand yourself. For most adults, getting a clear answer is the first time decades of struggle have an explanation. And an explanation opens up options that weren't there before.

  • You stop blaming yourself for things that were symptoms, not character flaws.

  • Treatment options become available (medication, strategies, support) that weren't on the table without a diagnosis.

  • Focus you can direct, not just focus that shows up when a deadline forces it.

  • Energy left at the end of the day, because you're not spending it all on holding everything together.

  • Trusting yourself again — knowing the problem had a name, and the name has a path forward.

Questions about adult ADHD diagnosis

Things people ask us a lot

The questions people ask most before booking an evaluation. If yours isn't here, just call.

What does an adult ADHD diagnosis involve?

A proper adult ADHD evaluation includes a clinical interview, standardized rating scales, and a review of how your symptoms have shown up across different areas of your life. We look at your full history, screen for conditions that overlap with ADHD, and give you a written report you can share with employers, schools, or other providers. You leave knowing exactly what was found and what it means.

Can adults really be diagnosed with ADHD for the first time?

Yes, and it's more common than most people realize. Many adults spent decades being told they were disorganized, unmotivated, or anxious without anyone looking at ADHD as the underlying cause. Older diagnostic criteria were built around hyperactive children, so inattentive and combined presentations in adults were frequently missed. A current evaluation using up-to-date tools gives a much clearer picture.

Will ADHD treatment interfere with my anxiety or depression meds?

That's something we look at carefully. Your provider goes over everything you're taking and your full health history before suggesting anything, and we treat ADHD right alongside any anxiety or depression rather than in isolation.

Do I need a referral to get an evaluation?

Nope. You can book straight with us, no referral needed, and we usually have same-week and weekend openings.

What does the evaluation actually involve?

Our evaluations use clinically established assessment tools including clinical interviews, standardized rating scales, and a review of your history across different settings. It's thorough enough to give you real answers, and we walk you through everything we found before you leave.

Does telehealth work as well as coming in?

For most people, yes. We offer both in-person and secure online visits across Idaho, so you can pick whatever fits your schedule and switch whenever you want.

What happens at the first visit?

You'll meet a licensed provider who listens to your story and starts a full evaluation. From there we go over what we found, answer your questions, and map out a plan together. No rushing.

How much does it cost, and do you take insurance?

New patients get $150 off the first visit, and we take a number of major insurers. For specifics on coverage or payment plans, give us a call at (208) 408-2989 and we'll walk you through it.

Still wondering about something? Call us at (208) 408-2989, or book and we'll reach out.
